NEW YEAR’S COCKTAIL PARTY
Speech Mr. Karel Frielink – Dean of the Consular Corps of Curaçao
New Year’s Cocktail Party in honor of
the Consular Representatives in Willemstad
hosted by Prime Minister Eugene Rhuggenaath
14 January 2020
Ladies and Gentlemen!
Protocol has been observed.
First of all, I would like to thank the Prime Minister for again hosting the annual cocktail party for consular representatives. Last year I mentioned in my speech that traditions cannot exist without a driving force. Traditions matter when they relate to important human values, such as integrity and selflessness. Traditions provide context for thoughtful reflection. But the tradition of an annual cocktail party offers the opportunity to express mutual appreciation. In important issues we can not only count on each other, but we also work together in a pleasant way. And that of course also applies in respect of the Directorate of Foreign Affairs. The true spirit of cooperation is a powerful force.
Given the socio-economic situation, many feel that Curaçao is currently at a critical moment in its history, a defining moment. The choices that will be made now will largely determine the future of Curaçao. It’s not just how we treat Mother Earth and all creatures great and small that matters, but also with which image of man we look at our fellow human beings. In my view people are intrinsically equal. Humanity cannot survive if an insufficient number of people behave themselves as fellow human beings, in the sense that they also feel responsible for the well-being of others. Humans have weaknesses and are exposed to various temptations which can actually harm the well-being of one or more fellow human beings. However, from ancient times onwards humans have been used to being corrected (and educated), and that is a task for many (government, parents, social environment). You could summarize all this by saying that every person has the moral duty to be a respectful fellow human being. For many reasons this will often be quite a challenge. But challenges must not be avoided!
Fortunately, a new year offers new opportunities. Let’s raise our glasses together to drink to new beginnings and new opportunities!
Thank you for your attention!
