NEW SURINAME CIVIL CODE

A historic decision

The National Assembly, Suriname’s parliament, passed the proposals for a new Civil Code (and related laws) on Tuesday, August 13, 2024. This project has been worked on for years.

These are the laws that will enter into force in the near future:

  1. Civil Code
  2. New Civil Code Adjustment Act
  3. Law on general time limits
  4. Trade Register Act
  5. Transitional Act to adapt legislation new Civil Code
  6. New Civil Code Transition Act
  7. Code of Civil Procedure

As for the new Surinamese law of legal persons (including corporations), I anticipated its introduction in my handbook published in 2023 (the book, see below, is in Dutch only). I look forward to an exchange of knowledge and experience in the years to come! Probably in January 2025 I will have the opportunity to teach a course in Paramaribo as a co-teacher.

Suriname, congratulations!!!
