THIS BLOG IS ARCHIVED BY THE LIBRARY OF CONGRESS

Blogs of today can be studied for years to come

I’m thrilled to learn from Robert Ambrogi’s blog that “Karel’s Legal Blog” has been archived in the Library of Congress:

On the Internet there is no rule against perpetuities. To the contrary our perpetuation seems assured. Latest case in point: the new Legal Blawgs Web Archive from the Library of Congress. Yes, just as the LOC is archiving all of our tweets, turns out it is also archiving a selection of legal blog posts, and has been doing so since March 1, 2007. (…)

The LOC describes …

NATIONAL INTEGRITY SYSTEM ASSESSMENT: CURAÇAO 2013

Transparency International

Between 2012 and 2013, Transparency International conducted a National Integrity System (NIS) assessment on Curaçao. The Caribbean island has a population of 150,560 and is an autonomous country within the Kingdom of the Netherlands. It has gone through significant political change in recent years following dissolution of the Netherlands Antilles in 2010 and the resulting modification of its country status. The purpose of these studies is to assess systemic corruption risks faced by a country, and produce a set of recommendations on how to mitigate those risks in the future. Those recommendations can then be …

LAWYERS AND THE INTERNET: BACK IN TIME

A 1996 Tour of some interesting WWW sites for Lawyers

In 1996 Delia Venables wrote an internet tour for lawyers (‘Around the World in 80 Minutes‘, Web Review, 1996 (3) The Journal of Information, Law and Technology; click here). She referred to the website of the Daily Telegraph as a good example of how the WWW could be made really useful and interesting. She mentioned that the USA was already a long way ahead of Europe in the provision of legal materials on the Internet. She also mentioned the International Law Page created by a law student …

CURACAO AND ITS DEFICIT

Who do we have to thank for the conservatorship?

Recently, a lot has been written and said about the fact that Curacao is under some kind of conservatorship (or guardianship). In this case conservatorship means something like: not being allowed to take your own (financial) decisions without the approval of a supervisor. How could it have come this far?

In the run-up to the dissolution of the Netherlands Antilles a debt restructuring program was extensively discussed and negotiated. At the time, there was a debt of several billions. Eventually, the Netherlands was prepared to provide several billions, so Curacao and St …

CURACAO MINISTER OF JUSTICE VERSUS PROCURATOR GENERAL

A Minister should not interfere in a criminal investigation

On 25 April 2012 the Curacao Minister of Justice (‘MofJ‘) Elmer ‘Kadè’ Wilsoe submitted an official request in a letter to the American Minister of Foreign Affairs Hillary Clinton to raise the attachment of the bank balances of lottery owner Dos Santos in the United States. Those attachments were made at the request of the Public Prosecutions Department (‘PPD‘) in Curacao in connection with a current criminal investigation (the ‘Bientu investigation‘).

However, a Minister should not interfere in a criminal investigation. Strict rules apply to this. And once a criminal case …

ON THE GERMAN – DUTCH CARIBBEAN RELATIONSHIP

Interesting editorial in The Daily Herald (St. Maarten)

Economic powerhouse

“The visit of German ambassador Heinz-Peter Behr last week should serve as an eye-opener on the largely untapped possibilities that European market offers. Up to now much of the attention regarding the “Old Continent” understandably regards the Netherlands and France from which “The Friendly Island” also has direct airlift, but Germany as Europe’s economic powerhouse and surrounding nations hold great tourism potential.

Curacao managed to attract Air Berlin flights recently and already has noticed a marked increase in the number of visitors from that part of the …
