Er is een enorm aanbod aan cursussen en trainingen die bedoeld zijn om oud en nieuw talent het nodige bij te brengen over het verbeteren van (de werkwijze binnen) organisaties, zodat ze goed of minimaal beter gaan functioneren. In eigentijdse termen hebben we het dan over ‘good governance’, en die kan dan ‘corporate’ of ‘private’ zijn, maar ook ‘public’ of ‘semi-public’. En dan zijn er nog allerlei andere onderverdelingen, zoals governance in het onderwijs, governance in de zorg, en noem maar op.

DE FILOSOFIE ACHTER CORPORATE GOVERNANCE
Het gaat om veel meer dan regels
Het antwoord op de vraag naar de filosofie achter corporate governance is afhankelijk van het perspectief van degene aan wie de vraag wordt gesteld. Wordt de vraag gesteld aan een grootaandeelhouder die de vennootschap als zijn ‘koninkrijk’ ziet, dan luidt het antwoord wellicht dat het gaat om het realiseren van maximale aandeelhouderswaarde. Met een beetje geluk houdt het antwoord ook in dat dit doel op een juridisch en ethisch juiste manier moet worden bereikt, en wellicht zelfs duurzaam.

Is corporate governance an old or young phenomenon? For starters, let’s travel back in time a bit. I won’t go as far as mankind’s earliest days; I’ll make a stop in Ancient Greece, to Plato’s (427 – 347 B.C.E.) lifetime, to be specific. You may have heard of this philosopher, a lover of wisdom. A seminar on Checks and Balances in Corporate Governance on Curacao, was held on Thursday February 21st, 2013. More than 125 interested managing directors, supervisory directors, lawyers, accountants and other participants were in attendance.
