Geert Wilders: “There is nothing wrong with Islam”
The Dutch congressman Geert Wilders (Freedom Party (Partij voor de Vrijheid)) will deliver a speech on September 11, 2010 in New York in opposition to the proposed building of a mosque close to Ground Zero. He will not only condemn the followers of Islam, but also Islam itself. He has already talked about a “dreadful mosque”. It is a great pity that he makes these sorts of statements. About 10 years ago Geert Wilders had very different opinions.

Amsterdam Court of Appeal orders the criminal prosecution of the Member of Parliament of the Dutch Second Chamber Geert Wilders
Amsterdam, 21 january 2009 – On 21 January 2009 the Court of Appeal in Amsterdam ordered the criminal prosecution of the member of parliament Geert Wilders for the incitement to hatred and discrimination based on his statements in various media about moslims and their belief. In addition, the Court of Appeal considers criminal prosecution obvious for the insult of Islamic worshippers because of the comparisons made by Wilders of the islam with the nazism.

Freedom of expression is one of the cornerstones of the Dutch democracy. Within the boundaries of the law, one may say whatever one wants to. However, even within these boundaries, expressing one’s view can be highly irresponsible, especially if the purpose thereof is to demonize and offend others. The Dutch politician Geert Wilders is a symbol of zero-tolerance and a champion of disrespectful remarks, and thus of irresponsible behavior.
